The founder’s field notes

How to start a product business in India: a launch checklist.

Before you order inventory, connect the customer, the offer and the operating plan. This checklist is a planning tool for product founders. Use each stage to identify the evidence you have, the assumptions you are making and the next decision you need to resolve.

1. Define the customer and the buying occasion

Describe one initial customer group, the problem or desire behind the purchase and the alternatives they use today. “Everyone who shops online” is too broad to guide product or brand decisions. Specify the situation in which a person would look for your product and what would make them hesitate.

Speak to potential customers about their current behaviour. Ask what they bought most recently, why they chose it and what disappointed them. Separate observed behaviour from supportive comments about your idea. Write down what evidence would cause you to change or stop the proposal.

2. Connect the product, brand and price

Create a short product brief with the intended use, key features, material or formulation requirements, packaging format and quality expectations. Then state the brand promise in plain language. It should describe a benefit the product can credibly deliver, rather than an unsupported superlative.

Compare the intended price with the alternatives the customer considers. Include the full cost of serving an order before deciding the margin available for marketing or overhead. If the product and price do not fit, revisit the specification or the channel before finalising identity and packaging.

3. Map business setup and specialist questions

List the business-structure, registration, taxation, product-labelling and certification questions relevant to your category and launch market. Assign each question to an appropriate qualified adviser. Requirements differ between products and markets, so a generic internet checklist is not a substitute for category-specific advice.

Record which decisions must be resolved before naming, printing packaging, accepting orders or exporting. A proposed brand name should have a separate plan for domain availability and trademark review. Budget for professional and authority fees as distinct items where applicable.

4. Compare suppliers using the same specification

Give shortlisted vendors the same brief, quantity assumptions and packaging requirements. Ask for sample costs, minimum order quantities, unit prices, lead-time assumptions, payment milestones and delivery terms. Compare the complete first-order commitment, not just the quoted unit cost.

Agree how the sample and the production batch will be evaluated. Document acceptance criteria and the person responsible for approval. Clarify how a change in materials, finish or packaging affects the quote. Keep the approved specification, sample feedback and commercial terms together.

5. Check that the business can fulfil the promise

Before launching, confirm that the product information, packaging, inventory and fulfilment process describe the same item. Assign SKUs, prepare listing content and decide who will receive stock, dispatch orders and handle returns. Review the current official requirements of your chosen selling platform.

Run through one order from listing to delivery using your planned costs and responsibilities. Decide what you will measure in the first stage: customer questions, stock availability, fulfilled-order contribution and reasons for returns can all inform the next decision. A launch date is useful only when the dependencies behind it are clear.

Keep a simple decision log

Use four columns: decision, evidence, owner and next action. For example, “choose pack size” may depend on customer preference, packaging cost and shipping weight. Mark it as unresolved until those inputs are reviewed. This keeps assumptions visible as your idea becomes a real operating plan.

Yuvika can help connect these workstreams through startup consulting and brand development. Send your current stage and the decision that is holding you back, rather than waiting until every box is complete.
